"Love and Unty in Watts"
Watts, Ca
Commissioned by BRIDGE Housing, this community based mural was created with the input of residents and community members at Cypress View (Jordan Downs) at Pearl Park in Watts. Man One took the community sketches and their notes to create the mural you see below.
The final mural design has a portrait of Ms. Pearl, who was a long time resident of the area, a nurse and much loved by the neighborhood. Unfortunately she passed away a few years prior so this park was named in her honor. Man One created her portrait in his bold and colorful style as if gazing out into the park with that soft smile she was known for. Also included in the mural across the top are the words “love” and “unity”. This is the message Man One wishes to convey to all the kids and community members who interact at the park. The overall design of the mural includes many common shapes like circles and triangles which gives the building a very ethnic and symbolic feel. The shades of orange earth tones create a calming yet dramatic effect. There are leaves and flowers of bird of paradise plants spread out among the mural design to bring that sense of beauty and act as a metaphor for the community. Hopefully this mural continues to bring smiles and happiness to the residents for years to come.
