METROPOLIS: A SNAPSHOT OF ART MAKING IN LA

“Metropolis: A Snapshot of Art Making in Los Angeles”

Opening night reception: Saturday November 16th, 2019 from 5-8pm

Bruce Lurie Gallery is located at 2736 La Cienega Blvd. Los Angeles, Ca 90048

ArtAboveReality is pleased to present “Metropolis: A Snapshot of Art Making in Los Angeles”, a group survey highlighting eighteen contemporary artists in the city of Los Angeles. What really defines a living and working artist in Los Angeles? What does an artist look like? How are artists able to manage expectations with new visibility? This exhibition takes an anthropological and sociological view on the creative practices of artists of color in the city. This re-engagement with artists and their workspaces allows the viewer a firsthand view of the creative process. This exhibition is dedicated to the loving memory of former California African American Museum Curator Vida L. Brown.

Artists In The Exhibition:
Chelle Barbour, Sharon Barnes, April Bey, Steven Cogle, Adrienne DeVine, Charles Dickson, June Edmonds, Al-Baseer Holly, Pamela Smith-Hudson, Overton Loyd, Man One, Michael Massenburg, Norman “NOMZEE” Maxwell, Sam Pace, Duane Paul, Wayne Perry, Miles Regis, and Jamaal “Hasef” Tolbert.

Curator:
Badir McCleary is an independent consultant. He holds an M.A. in Arts Business from Sotheby’s Institute of Art (Los Angeles/London) where he focused on emerging art markets. Having extensive contemporary art history knowledge and experience, Badir is able to tackle large projects with confidence, protecting and tracking deliverables and ensuring high level success for clients. Badir was the Co-Owner and Director of Gallery 38 (Los Angeles), a project that produced exhibitions for emerging artists of color in South Los Angeles and helped contribute to several public projects globally, helping artists transform communities through visual aesthetics.

COUPLES PORTRAIT

I just had the honor of being commissioned to create a portrait for my newest art collector couple, Henry and Janet. They asked me to fit both of their faces onto a single wood panel in my colorful and unique style. It was a little challenging because of the size, I usually prefer to work larger, but I was very happy with the final painting and so were they!

It’s always very satisfying to be given the freedom to create something so personal for some very good people. I think they will be enjoying this piece for many years to come!

PORTRAITS BY MAN ONE

Happy to announce the launch of my new site: “PORTRAITS BY MAN ONE” solely dedicated to highlighting my commission based portrait works. It’s a very simple site but with the help of our good friend and film maker Hans Fjellestad we created a nice little film to explain my process. You can always contact me direct if interested in getting a portrait done for you or a loved one at: manone@manone.com

Enjoy!
