MY FIRST METAL SCULPTURE!

Last year I was asked by my friend and art collector, Jan, if I would create a metal sculpture for her home. I immediately said YES!  Mind you, I've never created any sculpture of this kind before. I also don't know anything about metal fabrication or welding, but why should I let something like that stop me! As an artist it's always exciting to learn new things and push yourself into uncomfortable territories. Sometimes you need to stretch yourself to grow. Here's my journey in pics.

SKETCHES:

The initial sketch. Just a quick idea.

Foamcore maquette.

I remember doing stuff like this in college.

Some beginning 3D versions thanks to my friend Rafael at VURO.

He's a pro, but I was still having trouble seeing it come to life.

Trying to study the shadows.

Getting closer.

PRODUCTION:

My friend Mark let us create havoc in his studio! He's got all the tools.

Time to cut metal! So we made a 1:1 scale template.

Luckily my good friend and pro metal shaper, Dominique, was in town from Paris.

Metal pieces on the floor. Now what?

This guy's an artist and a pro!

He did the precision cuts and welds. At this point, I mostly supervised.

Now we've got something here!

So shiny!

FINISHED PIECE:

Installed!

Looks good on the wall!

So cool how the light bounces off of it.

Reminds me of some mecha futuristic style.

Could be a spaceship.

Looks heavy huh?

Love the shadows it creates.

ADOBE MAX BASH

I was invited to help guests have fun with a graffiti wall for last nite's Adobe Max Bash after party during their big creative convention in DTLA...


Paints, gloves and markers were set up...


I painted a quick logo and some motifs...


Stencils were placed about...


Then this happened!









Good times!


Too bad I wasn't feeling 100% to watch the Black Keys perform...there's always next time.

Street code: Tags don't go over pieces, but in this case I kinda like it!
